Hunter Biden Pleads Not Guilty to Gun Charges

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE - JULY 26: Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, departs the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Building and United States Courthouse on July 26, 2023 in Wilmington, Delaware. Biden pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges in a deal with prosecutors to avoid prosecution on an additional gun charge. However, the federal judge overseeing the case unexpectedly delayed Biden's plea deal and deferred her decision until more information is put forth by both the prosecution and the defense. Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to three illegal gun possession charges during an appearance in a Delaware federal court on Tuesday.

The son of President Joe Biden pleaded not guilty to the three gun charges relating to a firearms purchase of a Colt Cobra 38SPL he made in October 2018 while on drugs, according to CNN.

Abbe Lowell, Hunter Biden’s defense attorney, said in a court filing on Sept. 19 that he would be pleading not guilty to the gun charges.

On Sept. 14, Hunter Biden was indicted on three firearms charges, two counts of making false statements about his history of drug use and one count of possessing a gun while on drugs.

In July, Hunter Biden appeared in federal court in Delaware and was set to accept a plea deal. The plea deal fell through after Federal District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika asked if the plea deal would give Biden immunity from prosecution for other crimes.

In August, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed David Weiss as the special counsel on the Hunter Biden investigation. This came after IRS whistleblowers accused investigators within the Department of Justice of having given Hunter Biden special treatment.

If found guilty, Hunter Biden faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison related to the gun charges.
