House Speaker Mike Johnson Credits Bible for His Worldview

WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 25: U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) applauds alongside fellow lawmakers as the House of Representatives holds an election for a new Speaker of the House at the U.S. Capitol on October 25, 2023 in Washington, DC. After a contentious nominating period that has seen four candidates over a three-week period, the House GOP conference selected Johnson as their most recent nominee to succeed former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who was ousted on October 4 in a move led by a small group of conservative members of his own party. Newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) credited the Bible for his worldview.

In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday, Johnson stood firm on his faith when pressed on his beliefs concerning homosexuality, which he called “sinful” and “destructive” at a Day of Truth event in 2005 meant to mobilize “students who believe homosexuality is sinful,” per NBC News.

“I respect the rule of law but I also genuinely love all people regardless of their lifestyle choices,” he explained. “This is not about the people themselves, I’m a Bible-believing Christian.”

Johnson continued:

“Someone asked me today in the media, they said, ‘It’s curious, people are curious. What does Mike Johnson think about any issue under the sun?’ I said, ‘Well, go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it – that’s my worldview.’ That’s what I believe and so I make no apologies for it.”

Johnson, who was once an attorney for the Christian legal group the Alliance Defense Fund, further emphasized it was his “personal worldview.”

On Oct. 25, Johnson posted a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, following his election.

“It is the honor of a lifetime to have been elected the 56th Speaker of the House. Thank you to my colleagues, friends, staff, and family for the unmatched support throughout this process,” he wrote.

He added, “It has been an arduous few weeks, and a reminder that the House is as complicated and diverse as the people we represent. The urgency of this moment demands bold, decisive action to restore trust, advance our legislative priorities, and demonstrate good governance.”

Furthermore, Johnson assured, “Our House Republican Conference is united, and eager to work.”

Johnson concluded his post stating his promises to the American people.

“As Speaker, I will ensure the House delivers results and inspires change for the American people. We will restore trust in this body,” he shared.

Johnson also promised to “advance a comprehensive conservative policy agenda, combat the harmful policies of the Biden Administration, and support our allies abroad.”

“And we will restore sanity to a government desperately in need of it. Let’s get back to work,” he wrote.
