Gun control activist David Hogg is facing criticism for his response to a Republican senator’s tweet about a friend who was killed in a mass shooting in Louisville, Kentucky.

On Monday night, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) wrote, “My friend Tommy Elliott was killed today in Louisville. He was my banker for many years.”

“This news is very shocking and sad for Ann and me. He did so much in the Louisville community, and we pray for his family during this awful time,” he added.

Hogg, a survivor of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, responded in a tweet, “Must be tough knowing you’re complicit.”

He added, “Your staff is also literally met with the survivors of gun violence, and said that they don’t care it is extremely hard for me to have sympathy for you. You have an enormous amount of power that could’ve been used to prevent what happened today and in Parkland.”

On Monday, a 25-year-old gunman opened fire in a downtown Louisville bank where he worked, killing five of his colleagues. Eight others were injured.

The gunman, who reportedly livestreamed the shooting and used a rifle, was shot and killed by law enforcement.
