Sen. Mazie Hirono Asks Barrett if She Has Sexually Assaulted or Harrassed Anyone

Senate Republicans have warned their Democratic colleagues against attacking President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett's faith during her confirmation hearings.

While Democrats have largely left Barrett's faith out of their questions, one senator is asking what she says is a question she asks of every nominee.

During the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearings on Tuesday, Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) noted that Chief Justice John Roberts said the judiciary branch is "not immune" from the issue of sexual misconduct.

Hirono said, "To ensure the fitness of nominees for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench or to any of the other positions ... for which they appear, I ask each nominee these two questions, and I will ask them of you."

"Since you became a legal adult, have you ever made unwanted requests for sexual favors or committed any verbal or physical harassment or assault of a sexual nature?" she asked.

Barrett responded, "No, Senator Hirono."

Hirono asked another question, "Have you ever faced discipline or entered into a settlement related to this kind of conduct?"

"No, senator," Barrett said.

In 2018, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation was almost derailed after he was accused of sexual assault when he was in high school. Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court in a narrow 50-48 vote.
