Former Secretary State of Hillary Clinton is hopeful Vice President Kamala Harris’s swearing-in will pave the way for women moving forward.

“It delights me to think that what feels historical and amazing to us today—a woman sworn in to the vice presidency—will seem normal, obvious, ‘of course’ to Kamala’s grand-nieces as they grow up. And they will be right,” Clinton wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

Harris was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor on Wednesday, as IJR previously reported.

President Joe Biden was sworn in soon after.

“We celebrate the triumph not of a candidate, but of a cause, the cause of democracy. The people, the will of the people, has been heard and the will of the people has been heeded,” Biden said during his speech.

He added, “We’ve learned again that democracy is precious. Democracy is fragile and at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed.”

Earlier on Wednesday Biden also took to Twitter to write, “It’s a new day in America.”

Former President Barack Obama also tweeted, “Congratulations to my friend, President [Joe Biden]! This is your time.”

Former President Donald Trump did not attend the inauguration and left for Florida after delivering his final remarks, as IJR reported.

He said he will “be back in some form.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence and Second Lady Karen Pence made an appearance at the inauguration.
