Vice President Kamala Harris will make a trip to the Northern Triangle and Mexico soon.

Sharing with a reporter on Wednesday, Harris said she is “happy” to take an upcoming trip to the Northern Triangle which consists of three Central American countries: Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Additionally, she will be visiting Mexico, per the White House pool report.

However, Harris does not currently have plans to visit the U.S. southern border.

“The President has asked Sec. Mayorkas to address what is going on at the border… I have been asked to address the root causes, similar to what” Biden did when he was vice president, Harris said, according to the pool report.

She also noted that the work the Biden administration is doing in the Northern Triangle to fix problems — such as food sustainability, fixing corruption, among others — will not be fixed overnight, per pool report.

Harris was tapped by President Joe Biden to lead the efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle in an effort to stem the flow of migrants to the U.S.-Mexico border.

As of Tuesday, it had been 21 days since she has been tapped for the position and not traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border, as Fox News notes.

The vice president shared that she has spoken with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei and “probably said too much.” She also spoke with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador by phone on April 7.

Her comments come as she was meeting with experts virtually on Wednesday morning regarding the Northern Triangle.

In March, migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border reached a 15 year high for the monthly total, as IJR reported on.
