Vice president-elect Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff are looking to shatter gender norms, as both of them will be making U.S. history.

Speaking exclusively in her first solo interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts since becoming the vice president-elect, Harris said that her husband is “very excited” to be making U.S. history as the first second gentleman of the United States.

Harris also shared that her husband has a sweatshirt that says “Girl dad” and that he is “very proud” to be the father of a daughter. Harris is the stepmother of Emhoff’s daughter and son.

“We still have so much work to do to remind our children of every gender that they should not be confined by the limited perception that some might have of who they are and what they can be,” Harris said.

Harris said she sees “each one of these moments” as the U.S. “advancing as a society.”

“It says to everyone, don’t let anyone put you in a box because of your gender,” Harris said.

Harris will become the first woman vice president in U.S. history. “The Vice President has never before been a woman, or Black, or Asian American,” Time magazine wrote in choosing Harris and Joe Biden jointly as 2020 “Person of the Year.”

She spoke with Time about being the first, to which she said, “My mother had many sayings. She would say, ‘Kamala, you may be the first to do many things; make sure you’re not the last.’ Which is why [in my victory speech], I said, ‘I will be the first, but I will not be the last.'”

“That’s about legacy. That’s about creating a pathway. That’s about leaving the door more open than it was when you walked in,” Harris added.
