Rep. Jody Hice (R-GA) believes it was supporters of former President Donald Trump who suffered due to the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6.

“In fact, it was Trump supporters who lost their lives that day. Not Trump supporters who were taking the lives of others,” Hice said during a hearing on the riots on Wednesday.

Trump announced in March he is endorsing Hice in his bid to unseat Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

In a statement, Trump called Hice “one of our most outstanding congressmen,” adding, “Unlike the current Georgia Secretary of State, Jody leads out front with integrity. Jody will stop the Fraud and get honesty into our Elections!”

Hice expressed his frustration with the second House impeachment of Trump, calling it “misguided” and an attempt to score “cheap political points.”

During a panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in February, Hice also criticized Raffensperger, as IJR previously reported.

“I guarantee you, Georgia is not blue, and what happened this election was solely because of a horrible secretary of state and horrible decisions that he made,” he said.

Hice continued, “And the Georgia General Assembly even now is in process of fixing a lot of that, and so I think we’re going to see some tremendous change in that regard.”

Included in Georgia’s recent election bill is a provision removing Raffensperger as the chairman of the State Election Board, replacing him with an appointee to be chosen by the state Legislature, as IJR previously reported.

“I don’t support it. Obviously, the secretary of state has been the chair of the State Election Board since 1960, and in a moment of retribution, I was stripped of that,” the Georgia secretary of state said.

He added, “And now, you’ll have an unelected person. That’s an awful lot of power to give an unelected person of a very important board.”
