Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) believes Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) is participating in a plot to prevent Republicans from winning a majority in the midterms by serving on the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

During an appearance on Fox News on Monday night, Banks said, “The very fact that Liz Cheney is a part of a well-designed plot to prevent the Republicans from winning back the majority to save this country from that radical agenda is everything you need to know about why the RNC censured Liz Cheney over the weekend and were right for doing so.”

Banks’ comments come after the Republican National Committee (RNC) voted to censure Cheney and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) for their decision to participate in the investigation of the riot.

In a statement after committee members first advanced the censure resolution, Cheney said, “The leaders of the Republican Party have made themselves willing hostages to a man who admits he tried to overturn a presidential election and suggests he would pardon Jan. 6 defendants, some of whom have been charged with seditious conspiracy.”

“I’m a constitutional conservative, and I do not recognize those in my party who have abandoned the Constitution to embrace Donald Trump. History will be their judge. I will never stop fighting for our constitutional republic. No matter what,” she added.

The decision to censure Cheney and Kinzinger has been met with disapproval from some Republican lawmakers.

Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Bill Cassidy (R-La.) tweeted their disapproval of the censure resolution.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) also weighed in as he noted that the resolution said the RNC wants Republicans to be unified but, he added, “That was not a unifying action.” Meanwhile, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) said Republicans have “issues that we should be focusing on besides censuring two members of Congress because they have a different opinion.”
