Don Thrasher, chairman of the Nelson County Republican Party in Kentucky, is calling on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to resign over his remarks about former President Donald Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“Given that the county party that I represent supports President Trump overwhelmingly and your complete and total disdain for the will of your constituents here in Nelson County I am formally demanding you immediately resign your leadership position within our party’s caucus in the United States Senate,” Thrasher wrote in a statement on Wednesday.

He added, “The overwhelming number of Republicans in Nelson County are not on your side on this issue and I speak on their behalf. I cannot speak for other county parties in Kentucky but if pressed for my thought I would say without reservation their constituents agree with my position on the matter.”

Thrasher claimed McConnell’s leadership does not “represent” the voters who backed him in the last primary election.

McConnell voted to acquit Trump on the charge of inciting an insurrection but later said Trump is “practically and morally responsible” for the violence at the Capitol, as IJR reported.

Thrasher told The Washington Post on Tuesday even though McConnell voted to acquit the former president, he “stirred up the hornets’ nest even worse.”

He continued, “There are people that are more mad now, because it just seems kind of duplicitous to a lot of people. He is trying to straddle the fence and he is not making anybody happy doing that.”

Trump slammed McConnell in a statement of his own on Tuesday. He called him “a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack,” as IJR reported.

Trump accused McConnell of “destroying the Republican side of the Senate, and in doing so, seriously hurting our Country.”
