East Coast gas chain Sheetz celebrated the Fourth of July by offering customers discounted gas at $1.776 a gallon.

Sheetz promoted the sale on Twitter stating, โ€œDonโ€™t sleep on this deal.โ€

According to the New York Post, this Fourth of July sale included 600 Sheetz locations in Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The company dropped the rate by about 50 percent to pay homage to the nationโ€™s birth and marked it at a rate that reflected the founding of the United States.

This led customers to line up and wait to take advantage of the Sheetz sale.

Others questioned how gas companies can change the price of fuel so easily.

Get go charging 2.75 and sheetz charging 1.776 per gallon as a special promotion for a day or a few days is just evidence of how much they(and other companies) are normally overcharging us for gas

Self-proclaimed gas analyst Patrick De Haan explained the situation stating, “For those who are wondering how @sheetz can afford to sell all grades of gasoline for such a LOW price: they are losing gobs of money, subsidizing the price. They’re losing in the ballpark of $1.50 on *every gallon* of regular, $1.75/gal on mid and $2/gal on premium.”

Sheetz is known for offering holiday price drops. This included a sale that reduced gas prices to $1.99 on Thanksgiving last year.

Sheetz CEO Travis Sheetz released a statement which noted, โ€œWe hope this discount helps our customers keep a little more change in their wallets as they travel to celebrate the 4th of July with friends and family, with an obvious nod to our nationโ€™s birthday.โ€
