Fox Host Says Trump’s Plan to Surrender in GA Is ‘About Sucking the Oxygen out of the Room’ After GOP Debate

Fox News’ Bret Baier believes former President Donald Trump’s plan to surrender to authorities in Georgia is “calculated” to distract from the first Republican primary debate.

Earlier this month, Trump was indicted in Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia. He was given until Aug. 25 to surrender to authorities.

However, on Monday, he revealed he will be surrendering on Thursday — the day after the first Republican presidential primary debate which is being hosted by Fox News.

Baier, one of the debate moderators, discussed the move during an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday.

“Do you think he planned this? Because that would be the worst counter-programming ever if that’s voluntary,” Hewitt asked.

Baier responded, “I think there has to be some planning, Hugh. I think it is about sucking the oxygen out of the room for anybody who had a big night on Wednesday.”

“It’s not a great counter-programming thing, but I do think it is calculated,” he added.

Trump has previously said he will not participate in primary debates. And he has reportedly taped an interview with former Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson that is expected to air the night of the debate.

Baier also argued the former president will “have to do a debate eventually.”

“I think it’s fair when these other candidates say, ‘It’s not a coronation; it’s an election,’” he added.

He also argued voters like to see candidates engage in debates, and it could hurt him if he does not.
