Several people within the White House and senior politicians have been infected with COVID-19, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, is suggesting it could have been prevented.

During American University’s Kennedy Political Union interview on Tuesday, Fauci blasted those who have called the coronavirus pandemic a “hoax.”

He then pointed to the wave of headlines within the past week of people from within the White House testing positive for the virus.

“Take a look at what happened this week at the White House,” Fauci said.

He continued, “That is a reality, right there. And every day that goes by more people are popping up that are infected. It’s not a hoax.”

The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases noted that the spread of the virus “could have been prevented.”

“It’s an unfortunate situation when you see something like that because that could have been prevented.”

President Donald Trump made known early Friday that he and the first lady tested positive for COVID-19. Vice President Mike Pence has repeatedly tested negative since, and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his wife have tested negative as well.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany is among the several people who have tested positive, though she said in her announcement that she was “experiencing no symptoms.” Additionally, senior adviser to the president Stephen Miller confirmed he tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday.

The president returned to the White House from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, on Monday where he was treated for COVID-19 since Friday. The president’s physician Dr. Sean Conley said that Trump reported “no symptoms” on Tuesday.
