Singer-songwriter Elton John is taking aim at the Vatican over the recent declaration that the Catholic Church will not bless same-sex unions.

The Vatican made the announcement on Monday, a statement approved by Pope Francis. In the statement, same-sex unions are called a “choice” that “cannot be recognized as objectively ordered to the revealed plans of God.”

It added that God “does not and cannot bless sin: he blesses sinful man, so that he may recognize that he is part of his plan of love and allow himself to be changed by him.”

The question that was proposed, “Does the Church have the power to give the blessing to unions of persons of the same sex?” The answer the Vatican gave, “Negative.”

In response, Elton John hit back.

“How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they ‘are sin’, yet happily make a profit from investing millions in ‘Rocketman’ – a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David?” he questioned on Instagram.

He added, “Hypocrisy.”

The singer pointed to an article by The Daily Beast in December 2019 where it was noted that the Vatican reportedly spent $4.5 million on helping to fund “Men in Black: International” and “Rocketman.” Regarding the funds, the Vatican told the publication at the time “investigations are in progress.”
