Marsha Espinosa, the assistant secretary of public affairs for the Department of Homeland Security explained border patrol agents “responded to a law enforcement request for assistance re an active shooter situation inside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Upon entering the building, Agents and other law enforcement officers faced gun fire from the subject, who was barricaded inside.”

She added, “Risking their own lives, these Border Patrol Agents and other officers put themselves between the shooter and children on the scene to draw the shooter’s attention away from potential victims and save lives.”

The Tuesday shooting left 21 dead, including 19 children and two adults.

President Joe Biden called for action after learning about the shooting.

“To lose a child is like having a piece of your soul ripped away,” Biden said.

He added, “There’s a hollowness in your chest, you feel like you’re being sucked into it, never able to get out. Suffocating. It’s never quite the same.”

Biden argued as a nation “we have to ask, when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God’s name, will we do what we know in our gut what needs to be done?”

He continued, “We have to act. Don’t tell me we can’t have an impact on this carnage.”

Calling for “commonsense” gun laws, Biden explained, “We know they work and have a positive impact.”
