Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) is tearing into President Joe Biden for tapping Vice President Kamala Harris to handle the migrant situation at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“She’s about the worst possible choice one could make,” Ducey said in Tucson, Arizona, on Wednesday.

He continued, “At no point in her career has she given any indication that she considers the border a problem or a serious threat.”

The governor added:

“If President Biden’s intent was to show that he’s taking this issue seriously, he’s really done the exact opposite here. He’s completely trivialized this issue by putting someone in charge who flat out just doesn’t care.”

Ducey’s remarks come shortly after Biden chose Harris to lead the efforts with Mexico to stem the flow of immigrants coming to the U.S. southern border.

During a meeting on Wednesday, Biden made the announcement. He said, “I have asked her, the VP, today, because she is the most qualified person to do it, to lead our efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle and the countries that are going to need help in stemming the movement of so many folks, stemming the migration to our southern border.”

A White House official also said, “She’ll work first on the goal of stemming the flow of irregular migrants to the U.S. … but at the same time, the real goal is to establish a strategic partnership with these countries based on respect and shared values,” according to The Hill.

Biden sought to place the blame on the Trump administration for the surge migrants coming to the southern border.

The president said, “If you deal with the problems in the country, it benefits everyone. It benefits us, it benefits the people, it grows the economies there. Unfortunately, the last administration eliminated that funding and did not engage in it and did not use it even though there was over $700 million to help get this done.”

“In the midst of the last administration’s somewhat draconian policies of separating children from their parents… what happened was that we found that there were serious spikes in the number of people heading to the southern border even in the midst of that,” he added.

“They were coming north and we did nothing to do much about it,” Biden said. “So this new surge we’re dealing with now started with the last administration but it’s our responsibility to deal with it humanely.”
