Donald Trump, Jr. is reacting to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) condemning former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s past comments.

During the Democratic debate in South Carolina on Tuesday, Bloomberg opened by accusing Sanders of having help from Russia’s Vladamir Putin. Sanders quickly responded condemning Bloomberg’s past praise of President Xi Jinping of China.

Shortly after Sanders’ comment, Trump, Jr. took to Twitter with a statement of his own.

He tweeted, “Bernie calling out Bloomberg for being China’s lapdog is much more real than Russia Russia Russia!”

Trump Jr.’s statement follows reports about Bloomberg’s business interests in China. It stems from Bloomberg’s remarks during a previous PBS interview.

Late 2019, Bloomberg received backlash for claiming President Xi Jinping is “not a dictator.”

“The Communist Party wants to stay in power in China and they listen to the public and the public says, ‘I can’t breathe the air.’ Xi Jinping is not a dictator,” Bloomberg said during an interview with PBS’s Margaret Hoover in September. “He has to satisfy his constituents or he’s not going to survive.”

When asked again if Jinping wasn’t a dictator, Bloomberg responded, “No, he has to, he has a constituency to answer to.”
