Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) slammed “cringey Hollywood celebrities” after they took aim at Florida during the 94th Academy Awards ceremony.

DeSantis said in a statement shared with The Washington Examiner, “Like NYC and DC elites, Hollywood elites love to hate Florida … except when they’re vacationing here and buying homes here!”

Wanda Sykes, co-host of the event, mocked Florida over the state’s Parental Rights in Education Act, which has also been called by critics the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

“Well, we’re gonna have a great night tonight, and for you people in Florida, we’re gonna have a gay night,” Wanda Sykes said.

DeSantis explained, “The lack of self-awareness is hilariously out of touch with Americans. The domestic migration pattern speaks for itself: California lost the most residents in 2021, and Florida gained the most residents in the same time frame.”

He added, “It’s a good thing Californians cannot vote in Florida elections, and it’s a great thing that ignorant, cringey Hollywood celebrities cannot veto bills passed by our legitimately elected state legislature.”

On Monday, DeSantis signed the bill into law. It will prohibit “classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity” in public schools, according to NBC News.

DeSantis noted the bill “prohibits classroom instruction about sexuality or things like ‘transgender’ in K through three classrooms.”

The Walt Disney Company released a statement saying it should “never have passed and should never have been signed into law.”

The statement continued, “Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that. We are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country.”
