Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is borrowing a page from liberals’ playbook of labeling certain demonstrations an insurrection.
A group called ShutDownDC called for demonstrators to “blockade the streets around the Supreme Court to rise up for the transformative change that our communities need” on Monday.
“Right now our political system is in crisis. Times of crisis can either be opportunities to break through the inertia and win transformational change or they can be opportunities for the establishment to further entrench the status quo,” the group wrote on its website.
The call to “shut down” the court comes after Politico published a draft opinion that appears to show it is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade.
During an appearance on “Fox & Friends” Monday morning, DeSantis said, “I think that we have a rule of law in this country, and you don’t get to just have a mob descend on a Supreme Court justice’s house or try to impede the operations of government because there may be a decision you don’t like.”
“That would be considered an insurrection, to stop a court from functioning, and yet they seem to be able to get away with a lot more than if the shoe was on the other foot,” he added.

While some people may think, “How dare DeSantis equate protests at the Supreme Court to the Jan. 6 insurrection?” let us remember what else was labeled an insurrection: Canada’s Freedom Convoy.
Earlier this year, a convoy of truckers shut down border crossings and the capital, Ottawa, as they called for an end to COVID-19 restrictions.
The head of Ottawa’s police board labeled the protests a “nationwide insurrection.”
In the United States, some in the media couldn’t resist using that phrase in reports about the protests.

According to Merriam-Webster, an insurrection is “an act or instance of revolting against civil authority or an established government.”
If we’re going to call parking trucks in a city to block roads because of Covid restrictions an “insurrection,” then blockading the Supreme Court over a decision that hasn’t even been handed down should probably fall under that definition too.
