Amid warnings about questioning election results, one House Democrat is telling supporters that a special election was stolen by Republicans.

Speaking to supporters on Thursday night, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas) said, “Our democracy is at stake.”

“There’s millions and millions of dollars from outside our region and outside our state that are coming here to try to steal our elections and take away your value and take away the process that we rely on, which is elections,” he continued. “And we don’t have the resources to compete with these outside resources. We can’t compete with the Koch brothers, we can’t compete with big oil, and big tobacco, and the NRA. They can outspend us, but they can’t outwork us.”

He went to claim that the special election for Texas’ 34th Congressional district was stolen.

Rep. Mayra Flores (R) won that election in June, but will face off against Gonzales in November due to redistricting.

“They stole that last election,” Gonzales claimed.

He added, “They spent $3 million to our $250,000, they campaigned for two years, and they still only won by less than one percent. So, the way to turn this around is getting out and vote.”

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) also attended the event and praised Gonzales for the work he is “doing to support our Democratic institutions, the infrastructure of our elections, the rule of law, the rule of law applies to everyone equally could not be more important.”

Gonzales’ comments come as President Joe Biden has been ringing the alarm bell about “MAGA Republicans,” who he said, “represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.”

“They do not believe in the rule of law. They do not recognize the will of the people. They refuse to accept the results of a free election,” he said in a speech earlier this month.

Those remarks came amid concerns about former President Donald Trump’s claim that the 2020 election was stolen. Several recounts and legal challenges did not find evidence of widespread fraud in the election.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre recently faced a question about her past tweets claiming that the 2016 presidential election and 2018 gubernatorial election in Georgia were stolen.

“I was talking specifically at that time of what was happening with voting rights and what was in danger of voting rights. That’s what I was speaking to at the time,” she said in defense of the tweets.

Jean-Pierre also pointed out that she acknowledged the winners of those elections.
