Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) is worried there could be attacks in residential neighborhoods of the city leading up to the inauguration.

During her appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, host Chuck Todd asked Bowser what level of threat the city is facing, and if she is concerned, there will be attacks in certain parts of the city despite heavy security in other parts.

“I’m not only concerned about other state capitals, I’m also concerned about other parts of Washington D.C.. What you’re showing is really the federal enclave of Washington D.C., not where the 700,000 of us live,” Bowser said.

She continued, “So our police department working with our federal law enforcement partners and the United States Army, quite frankly, also has a plan to pivot if we have any attacks in our neighborhoods.”

Bowser’s comments come just days before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Biden’s spokeswoman Kate Bedingfield was asked about the incoming administration’s plans to still conduct the ceremony at the U.S. Capitol just two weeks after pro-Trump supporters launched attacks on the location, as IJR previously reported.

“That is certainly our plan. I think that will send an incredibly important visual image to the world about the resilience of American democracy, and so our plan and our expectation is that President-elect Biden will put his hand on the Bible with his family on the West side of the Capitol on the 20th,” she said on Sunday.

Bedingfield continued, “We’re working to ensure that we’ll be prepared, but we have full faith in the United States Secret Service and their partners who have been working for over a year on the planning to ensure that this event is safe.”

The former vice president confirmed he feels safe about his upcoming inauguration, as IJR previously reported.
