Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) introduced legislation on Monday to begin the process of ousting McCarthy as Speaker of the House after the House passed a continuing resolution, narrowly avoiding a government shutdown.

Hours after being ousted as Speaker of the House, McCarthy announced that he would not be running for the position again, according to The Hill.

“From the day I entered politics, my initial mission has always been to make tomorrow better than today. I fought for what I believe in, and I believe in this country of America,” McCarthy said. “My goals have not changed. My ability to fight is just in a different form.”
