Former Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) is announcing a primary bid against incumbent Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R).

Perdue, who is backed by former President Donald Trump, said on Twitter on Monday, “I’m running for Governor to make sure Stacey Abrams is NEVER Governor of Georgia. We need bold conservatives who will stand up to the woke left, not cave to their radical demands. Join me in this fight to Stop Stacey and Save Georgia.”

Stacey Abrams (D) announced last week that she is running for Governor in 2022. She was defeated by Kemp in the 2018 general election for governor.

A Perdue campaign spokesperson told the Washington Examiner, “If Brian Kemp hadn’t caved in to Stacy (sic) Abrams’ consent decree and fought Abrams as hard as he fights Trump and Perdue, we wouldn’t be in this mess. Just ask President Trump. Perdue is running to unite Republicans and stop Stacey Abrams.”

As The Hill reports, “While Perdue’s entrance into the governor’s race is a win for Trump and his allies, it sets the stage for a potentially long and bruising primary fight that some Republicans worry will hamper them in the 2022 general election.”

A GOP poll obtained by the Washington Examiner in November showed that with Trump’s endorsement, Perdue lead Kemp 41% to 34%.
