When President Joe Biden was inaugurated in 2021, he inherited a world at peace courtesy of President Donald Trump’s first term in office. Regardless, the biased mainstream media swore up and down that Biden’s foreign policy experience made him a better choice, and his team would be akin to putting the “adults back in the room.” As it turns out, nothing could have been further from the truth. A long and agonizing four years later, the world is an extremely dangerous place and as President-elect Trump prepares for his second inauguration, there is an alarming number of problems that must be addressed quickly in essentially all corners of the globe. The bottom line is that Biden’s weak-kneed foreign policy destabilized the world in Afghanistan, Ukraine and the Middle East, and has enabled China to operate largely unchecked in the Western Hemisphere despite its awful behavior. As tensions between China and Taiwan continue to heighten, the United States under the leadership of Trump and his foreign policy team will have to deal with President Xi Jinping continuously warning the free world that China will “reunify” with Taiwan. Trump will correct the situation by putting Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) in as secretary of State. Rubio will be handed a massive portfolio of global challenges that are not for the faint of heart. Biden’s reckless withdrawal from Afghanistan sent a signal to our adversaries that under his leadership the American government would make weak national security decisions based on political pressure from the radical left. The United States is still paying mightily for this awful mindset. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin wasted no time invading Ukraine to start a bloody war that continues nearly three years later. Putin’s war in Ukraine is costing our country billions upon billions in taxpayer dollars that could be used at home to help our own citizens. And as his single term comes to an ignominious end, Biden never articulated a coherent policy or end game for the United States in Ukraine. Then in October 2023, the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hamas launched a barbaric attack against Israel that killed over 1,200 innocent people while taking an additional 250 hostages. Terror proxy groups funded by Iran ran roughshod throughout the Middle East on Biden’s watch — including a seemingly nonstop barrage of attacks on U.S. military installations in the region. During his time in the Senate, Rubio has become an expert in international affairs as vice chairman of the Intelligence Committee and as a senior member of the Foreign Relations Committee. As the son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio understands that freedom must be defended vigilantly and that the evils of socialism and communism are real. With Rubio as our next secretary of State, Trump has a seasoned leader who can speak about American exceptionalism and the U.S. Constitution with eloquence and conviction anywhere in the world. Rubio has a strong and unflinching record of getting tough with China, holding Iran to account and standing shoulder to shoulder with Israel. On China in particular, the senior senator from Florida has always been crystal clear about the threat posed by the CCP. Rubio has said that: “Without action, the Chinese Communist Party will continue to rise at America’s expense. A world order dominated by such a regime is bad for America and the values of freedom, liberty, and individual rights.” Common-sense straight talk like this about the enormous challenges we face as a country in the years ahead is long overdue. Rubio’s positions on Iran and Israel represent another sharp contrast with the shameful moral equivalence of the Biden-Harris administration. Recently Rubio wrote: “Iran’s brutal missile attack on Israeli civilians reinforces what we have always known: the terrorist Iranian regime seeks to dominate the Middle East through death, chaos, and ultimately the complete destruction of Israel. This regime can no longer be appeased. I urge the reimposition of a maximum pressure campaign against Iran and fully support Israel’s right to respond disproportionately to stop this threat.” These words come as a relief to our allies and put our adversaries on notice that with the incoming Trump administration, business as usual is over. At his core, Rubio is an anti-establishment political outsider who isn’t afraid to speak truth to power, in the mold of Donald Trump. Rubio has a convincing record of taking on entrenched special interests and questioning failed status quo policies across the board. Rubio’s skills in this regard will be a perfect complement to Trump’s forward thinking on geo-political priorities like Canada, Greenland, the Panama Canal and renaming the Gulf of Mexico as he takes the oath of office on January 20. The American people can rest assured that Marco Rubio will be an outstanding secretary of State, and the Senate should approve his nomination with robust bipartisan support immediately. Thanks to President Joe Biden, he will certainly have his hands full. David Bossie is the president of Citizens United and served as a senior adviser to the Trump-Pence 2020 campaign. In 2016, Bossie served as deputy campaign manager for Donald J. Trump for President and deputy executive director for the Trump-Pence Transition Team.
