New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) made the executive decision to extend the state’s stay-at-home order through June 13, but there are some regions that will not have to wait that long to reopen.

Cuomo issued a tweet Thursday announcing which regions of New York will begin opening Friday at midnight.

“The Finger Lakes, Southern Tier, Mohawk Valley, the North Country, and Central NY are ready to begin Phase 1 of reopening tomorrow,” Cuomo wrote. “The others can be UN-PAUSED the moment they hit their benchmarks. New Yorkers be proud. Your actions bent the curve.”

According to the executive order, the industries included in phase one are “construction, agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, retail – (limited to curbside or in-store pickup or drop off); manufacturing and wholesale trade.”

Other regions will be able to reopen when they meet the necessary criteria.

“Any additional regions which meet the criteria after such date will be deemed to be incorporated into this Executive Order without further revision and will be permitted to re-open phase one industries, subject to the same terms and conditions,” Cuomo wrote.

New York has been the hardest by the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. As of Friday morning, there are more than 348,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and over 27,000 deaths.

Cuomo has taken several measures to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on the state.

As of April 30, 24-hour subway services came to a temporary halt for disinfecting, as IJR previously reported.

On May 1, he announced K-12 schools and college facilities would be closed for the rest of the academic year, as IJR previously reported.

Cuomo also recently ordered nursing home workers to be tested for the coronavirus biweekly.

He made efforts to provide relief to those struggling by extending a statewide moratorium on evictions until August 20.

The United States continues to see an uptick in confirmed coronavirus cases. As of Friday morning, there are more than 1,420,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and over 85,000 deaths.
