Stephen Colbert is slamming Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) for his remarks about gun control following the fatal mass shooting in Colorado earlier this week.

During Tuesday’s “The Late Show,” Colbert showed a clip of Kennedy speaking at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing during which he compared gun violence to drunk driving.

“We have a lot of drunk drivers in America … We ought to try to combat that too,” Kennedy said.

Colbert responded, “OK, I’ll take that deal. Let’s regulate guns the way we regulate alcohol and cars. You got to be 21, you got to pass a test to get a license, you got to have a registration and insurance for your gun.”

He added, “If you move to a new state, you got to do the whole damn thing all over again and you can’t go out loaded.”

Offering another take on gun control, Kennedy later said, “I don’t believe we have a gun control problem in America. I believe we have an idiot control problem.”

Colbert fired back, “Oh, we definitely have an idiot control problem. It’s people who don’t recognize that this country has long had a gun problem, John Kennedy.”

The senator also said during Tuesday’s hearing, “But I think what many people on my side of the aisle are saying too is the answer is not to get rid of all sober drivers. The answer is to concentrate on the problem.”

President Joe Biden urged Congress on Tuesday to approve two gun control bills passed by the House of Representatives.

When pressed on whether Biden would take executive action, Vice President Kamala Harris told CBS News on Wednesday, the president is not ruling it out but, “If we pass legislation it’s permanent. If the Congress acts then it becomes law.”
