House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) is suggesting former President Donald Trump could be called to testify before a select committee investigating the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6.

CNN’s Dana Bash asked Clyburn on Sunday if Trump should testify.

“Oh, if it comes to that, they should go wherever the facts lead. They may be able to get what they want and need without him testifying,” Clyburn said.

He continued, “I would not want to see a former president testifying in such a situation as this. But if that’s what it takes in order to get to the bottom of this, because this is more than any one person. This is this country.”

Trump was impeached by the House following the riot on the charge of “incitement of insurrection.” He was later acquitted in the Senate.

The House voted 222-190 to create a select committee to investigate the January 6 events on Wednesday. The only Republicans to side with Democrats were Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.).

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) named her appointments to the committee, which include Cheney, as IJR reported.

Other members of the committee include: Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), as chairman, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Texas), Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.), Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), and Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.).

“I’m honored to have been named to serve on the January 6th select committee. Congress is obligated to conduct a full investigation of the most serious attack on our Capitol since 1814,” Cheney said in a statement.

She added, “What happened on January 6th can never happen again. Those who are responsible for the attack need to be held accountable, and this select committee will fulfill that responsibility in a professional, expeditious, and non-partisan manner.”

Following consultation with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), the remaining five members of the committee will be selected.
