House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) weighed in on President Joe Biden’s sinking approval rating, suggesting it was “a real tough time to become president.”

During an interview with “Fox News Sunday,” host Chris Wallace mentioned the situation in Afghanistan, inflation, issues at the border and Biden’s approval rating.

He asked Clyburn, “What’s going wrong with this president?”

Clyburn responded, “I don’t know that anything is going wrong. The country’s in a bad place. We have a pandemic. I happen to chair the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus, and I can tell you you’d be surprised at how much went wrong with trying to combat this virus. And that put everybody in a pretty bad way.”

The House majority whip explained how “education is being called into question because kids were out of school and couldn’t go to school, people were out of work.”

He continued, “And now we’re trying to bring the economy back, and you’ve got all of these other things happening. So the country’s in a bad place. It was a real tough time to become president of the United States. It’s just that simple.”

A USA Today/Suffolk poll released on Sunday found only 38% of Americans say they approve of Biden’s job performance, as IJR reported.

Fifty-nine percent disapprove. According to the poll, “Nearly half of those surveyed, 46%, say Biden has done a worse job as president than they expected, including 16% of those who voted for him. Independents, by 7-1 (44%-6%), say he’s done worse, not better, than they expected.”

The poll also reported only 27.8% said they approve of Vice President Kamala Harris’ job performance. Fifty-one percent said they disapprove.

The president recently responded to his approval ratings.

“That’s not why I ran. I didn’t run to determine how well I’m going to do in the polls,” Biden said. “I ran to make sure that I followed through on what I said I would do as president of the United States.”
