The late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) was one of the last elected Republicans willing to stand up to President Donald Trump until he passed away in the summer of 2018. His widow, Cindy McCain, has taken up the political torch and endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden this cycle.

Asked about her support for Biden during an interview Sunday, Cindy McCain said, “I am Republican… and I’m going to remain a Republican but this is far, far, way far more than party politics now. We have a president that is simply not listening to experts, he’s putting people’s lives in danger.”

She continued, “[Trump has] belittled our troops by calling them ‘losers’ and ‘suckers’, he’s a kind of man that doesn’t have any empathy, any kind of character, any kind of integrity or any kind of values.”

“I think Americans deserve better. I know my family deserves better and so that’s why I’ve endorsed Joe.”

McCain noted that the McCain and Biden families have known each other for a long time and said “so I know the kind of man he is. Those are the kinds of things that make me not only want to have a president like Joe but to work for Joe and to ensure that he can be elected.”

In late September, Biden announced that Cindy McCain was joining the advisory board of his transition team.

At the time of that announcement, Cindy McCain wrote, “Joe and I don’t always agree on the issues, and I know he and John certainly had some passionate arguments, but he is a good and honest man. He will lead us with dignity.”

President Donald Trump attacked Cindy McCain on Twitter after she endorsed Biden, saying that he was “never a fan of John” and “Cindy can have Sleepy Joe.”
