Former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney is not letting CBS News get away with casting election denialism as a mainly Republican issue.

Gayle King, a “CBS Mornings” co-host, claimed, “When it comes to the election deniers, though, that primarily is the Republican Party.”

“And that I think has led to many problems,” she added.

However, Mulvaney pushed back as he said, “No, that’s not true.”

“Look, Jan. 6 is what it is. It was awful, it’s terrible, I’m not here to defend that,” he continued. “But Democrats have denied election results just as much as Republicans if you take Jan. 6 out of the equation.”

CBS News’ White House correspondent Nancy Cordes jumped in as she said, “That’s just factually not true. I mean there are hundreds of Republican candidates on the ballot tonight who have denied the outcome of the last election.”

“There’s nothing like that on the other side,” she added.

Do you think it is "primarily" a Republican issue?

Mulvaney then noted Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams did not concede the 2018 election.

“Why can’t we all agree that everyone’s a little bit at fault and try to fix it as opposed to everybody saying, ‘Well, it’s gotta be a Republican at fault and until they change the country’s not going be fixed?'” he asked.

There has been no evidence to substantiate claims widespread fraud tilted the election results. And ABC News reports election workers have faced an uptick in harassment and threats since 2020.

And former President Donald Trump’s claims about the 2020 election were also behind the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

But it is worth pointing out that several prominent Democrats including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Jimmy Carter questioned the results of the 2016 election. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also claimed it was stolen.

Abrams told The New York Times Magazine in 2019, “I legally acknowledge that Brian Kemp secured a sufficient number of votes under our existing system to become the governor of Georgia. I do not concede that the process was proper, nor do I condone that process.”

Additionally, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas) claimed in September Republicans “stole” his opponent’s special election victory from the Democrats.

And looking forward, Clinton insisted “right-wing extremists already have a plan to literally steal the next presidential election.”

So yes, Democrats did not storm the U.S. Capitol after an election did not go there way. But there have been plenty of Democrats who have raised doubts about election results. And that is not some genie you can just put back in the bottle.
