The sale of new gasoline-powered cars is expected to be prohibited in California.

According to The New York Times, California is set to put into effect the plan on Thursday.

The outlet explained that the rule will be issued by the California Air Resources Board.

It will “require that 100 percent of all new cars sold in the state by 2035 be free of the fossil fuel emissions chiefly responsible for warming the planet, up from 12 percent today,” as the Times reported.

The Times noted the rule also sets “interim targets requiring that 35 percent of new passenger vehicles sold in the state by 2026 produce zero emissions.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) issued a statement commenting on the move.

“The climate crisis is solvable if we focus on the big, bold steps necessary to stem the tide of carbon pollution,” Newsom said, according to the Times.

CA continues to lead the way:

“Experts said the new California rule, in both its stringency and reach, could stand alongside the Washington law as one of the world’s most important climate change policies.” https://t.co/l19OOcsLgF

Users on Twitter took to the platform to react to the report.

One user reacted, saying, “So California wants to stop selling gas powered passenger cars by 2035. This is exactly why there should be a desperation between this policies for urban, suburban, and rural California. How are people without electricity going to have an EV???”

Policy editor at NBC News, Benjy Sarlin, tweeted, “California is banning sales of new gas cars by 2035. EU countries already moving toward 2035 bans. This isn’t 2000. Lots of potential climate solutions are here already, the policies are about speeding them up.”

This is huge. It should accelerate the growing shift towards all-electric cars. My son and I both have electric cars and love them. They’re great cars, require near-zero maintenance and we never think about the price of gas. https://t.co/EHh4yPKxBj

Speaking as a native Californian, I can’t wait to see how this triggers Canada’s oil and gas fanboys. https://t.co/o6u40DkJGi

Cool. What is California doing to reduce the number of car trips taken?

A climate solution is useless without both outcomes: 1) fewer gas cars, and 2) fewer car trips taken overall. https://t.co/wdIZ6KckDx

The plan comes more than a year after the Biden administration set a goal of having half of all new vehicles sold by 2030 be electric.

“Folks, the rest of the world is moving ahead. We’ve just got to step up,” Biden said at the time.
