Former Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Monday on Fox News that the Democrat Party’s downfall could give Republicans an opportunity to court key voting blocs for the upcoming elections, including younger voters and Hispanics.

Post-election polls from November 2024 show President Donald Trump gained support among once-reliable Democrat strongholds, such as black and Hispanic men. On “Jesse Watters Primetime,” Watters asked McCarthy what opportunity he believes Republicans have as the Democrat Party struggles to find a unifying message and leader ahead of the midterm elections.

“Well, what you see is not just President Trump win the election. He actually broke the Democrats. Think about this. The Democrats are now protesting electric vehicles. They’re at the lowest favorability. They’re a minority view in the Supreme Court. They can’t stop any legislation, but this is the key part,” McCarthy said.

“Gen Z, the young population, is not only probably one of the most conservative generations since the 80s, they’re pro-Trump, but they’re also anti-Democrat. The Hispanic population, trending Republican. Then look to the future,” McCarthy added. “There’s only three Republicans sitting in seats in the House that Harris carried. Eight years ago, there was 23. It’s a bad Senate map for the Democrats.”

Prior to the 2024 election, New York Times/Siena College polls showed Trump leading former Vice President Kamala Harris among Gen Z men by 58% to 37%, with Harris falling behind with younger male voters despite her lead among the generation’s women.

McCarthy went on to say that not only could it be “impossible” for Democrats to potentially win the 2028 general election, but they have not “woken up” to the fact that their policies are the issue for voters.

“Then the Electoral College, their liberal policies are making people move out of these blue states. You said it. It’s almost gonna be impossible for the Democrats to win the presidency. They can win Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, and they would still lose,” McCarthy said. “They still haven’t woken up. They don’t realize their policies are what’s driving people crazy.”

A recent CNN/SSRS poll released on March 12 said that Democrats have sunk to their lowest favorability rating of 29%, dropping 20 points since January 2021. While some Democrats have attempted to warn the party about their policies, others, like Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin, have said that the party’s issue isn’t the policies themselves but rather a “messaging” and “brand problem.”
