Democratic strategist James Carville criticized ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith in a Wednesday video for floating a presidential run as a Democrat due to the party’s lack of strong candidates.

During a Monday episode of “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” Smith said that while he currently has no desire to run for president, he would do so as a Democrat if he ever chose to enter politics. Carville, in a YouTube video, said Smith is uninformed on the topic of politics and that he should stick to sports.

WATCH:

“When it comes to politics, he don’t know his ass from a hole in the ground. He’s on that, running his Goddamn mouth about how he may have to run as a Democrat because there’s nothing left of the Democratic Party and there’s no talent,” Carville said. “Stephen A, are you shitting me? I mean, you say you’re friends with [Democratic Maryland Gov.] Wes Moore and you say you’re friends with [Democratic Pennsylvania Gov.] Josh Shapiro. I’m friends with both of them. I think they’re really extraordinary, talented people, but I got news for you, dude — there’s six or seven other people in the Democratic Party that are just that talented.”

“So before you start running your fucking mouth off about politics, a topic of which you really don’t know anything about, you ought to sit back and think about it and call some people and run it by them,” he continued. “But don’t let your political stupidity stand in the way of your outspoken and, I think, often insightful views when it comes to American sports, of which I think you are an expert at … So, Stephen A, keep up your shit on sports. I enjoy it, I like it, but don’t make a fool of yourself anymore talking about politics.”

Smith received 2% support in a January poll by McLaughlin & Associates that asked participants to choose their preferred candidate for the 2028 Democratic presidential primary. He was tied with Moore and trailed Shapiro by one, while former Vice President Kamala Harris led with 33% support.

On Smith’s Monday episode, he said the lack of formidable Democratic candidates is to blame for people considering him as a contender for the 2028 Democratic primary.

“Y’all don’t have anybody. You don’t have anybody. Who you got? Who you got? Kamala Harris better not run,” he said. “She better not run. She’s not going to win a presidency in 2028.”
