Sen. Bernie Sanders‘ (I-Vt.) campaign team is at the center of controversy following a baseless statement about former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s health. Now, the billionaire business man’s advisor is firing back.

It’s no secret Sanders suffered a heart attack but has Bloomberg also?

According to Sanders’ campaign team, Bloomberg has suffered multiple heart attacks. That was the response offered by Sanders’ spokesperson when asked about the presidential hopeful’s health and medical records. The problem is there’s no evidence to back those claims.

See the comments below:

JUST NOW: Press Sec for @BernieSanders equates questions on his medical records to "smear" campaign. & claims @MikeBloomberg has "suffered heart attacks."

Bloomberg had an irregular heartbeat & stents. But I've seen no record of attack. Checking now.pic.twitter.com/iW5Ag2xbUt

Now Bloomberg’s campaign team has fired back with a scorching statement about the seemingly reckless claims.

Senior adviser to Bloomberg’s campaign Tim O’Brien tweeted in response to the claims describing the situation as a “Trumpy lie.” He refuted the claims and offered factual information about Bloomberg’s health.

“This is such a Trumpy lie from the Sanders camp, which rolls like Trump in many ways,” O’Brien tweeted. “Mike Bloomberg has *never* had a heart attack. Bernie Sanders, on the other hand, has had a heart attack. Those are the facts. It’s a dangerous time when Sanders goes all-in with Trumpism.”

Bloomberg’s campaign manager also called Sanders’ spokesperson’s comment “completely false.”

Sanders’ spokesperson later attempted to clarify that she “misspoke”:

I mispoke when I said Bloomberg had a heart attack. Rather, he underwent the same stent procedure as Bernie. Bernie released 3 detailed medical reports in December — just like the other candidates.

The latest news follows a string of reports about Sanders’ refusal to release his medical records. Initially, Sanders admitted that he’s been treated for “gout, hypercholesterolemia, diverticulitis, hypothyroidism, laryngitis secondary to esophageal reflux, lumbar strain, and complete removal of superficial skin lesions.” He’d agreed to release his records.

Now, he argues that its “unfair” to do so and if he starts it will never end, as the New York Daily News reports.

“You can start releasing medical records and it never ends,” Sanders said during an interview earlier this month.

Sanders’ campaign has labeled the request as nothing more than a “smear” campaign to paint a picture of uncertainty where his transparency is concerned.
