When the Los Angeles Dodgers decided to invite the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to its “pride night,” the team was rightfully slammed.
Still, the team at least had a bit of cover in inviting an anti-Catholic group to its event in that it is not a government organization. In the United States, if you want to spit on religion by hosting a group that mocks it — you can. And we should be grateful to have the right to criticize the beliefs of a certain religion or denomination without fear of persecution from the government.
But then members of the California state legislature looked at the outrage over the Dodgers’ incident and said, “Hold my beer.”
San Francisco’s KRON4 reported on Monday, “San Francisco drag icon Sister Roma was honored on the floor of the California State Legislature on Monday as an official Pride Month honoree.”
“Sister Roma is a member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an LGBTQ advocacy group whose members dress as drag versions of nuns,” it added.
State Sen. Scott Wiener (D) said, “I’m so proud of Sister Roma and her work in the community. And I’m proud of California for standing strong to support LGBTQ people as their community is under assault in the rest of the country.”

A statement on the legislature’s website reads, “The sisters have stood and fought with us when no one else would.”
“The California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus is proud to honor Sister Roma for her tireless work raising millions of dollars to support HIV/AIDS patients, as well as creating the ‘Stop the Violence’ campaign to raise awareness about attacks on members of the LGBTQ+ community,” it continued.
In case you have been blissfully unaware of this sick group, its members — made up of “queer and trans” drag queens — are known for dressing up as nuns and mocking Catholicism.
As National Review notes, “The group’s motto is ‘go and sin some more.’ They annually host a ‘Foxy Mary and Hunky Jesus’ contest on Easter Sunday.”
It is one thing to say the LGBT community should be shown tolerance, and that some legislation in red states regarding drag queens is going too far and threatening freedom of expression and freedom of speech.
And lord knows the Catholic Church is not above reproach and criticism for its behavior over the centuries. Yet that does not mean faithful members of the church should be insulted and demeaned by having lawmakers honor a group that attacks and demeans the most sacred figures and objects of their faith.
For lawmakers to decide to welcome a member of a blasphemous group into the legislature to honor them, is sick. It goes far beyond just toleration and acceptance. It is a celebration of debauched behavior and a group that explicitly attacks religion.
It is not hard to imagine the outrage that would follow if lawmakers in a red state decided to honor an individual who performed acts designed to mock Islam and Allah on the floor of their legislature.
Surely the state’s LGBTQ Caucus could have found another group to honor for its donations to HIV and AIDS patients or efforts to combat violence against their community. Yet they specifically chose this group.
Frankly, they should be thankful a sinkhole did not open up in Sacramento and swallow the state’s capitol.
