Former Vice President Joe Biden (D) is setting his sight on the presidency, but that does not mean leaving Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) behind.

Biden acknowledged Sanders’ significant and positive impact on the nation and how that could play a part in Biden’s strategy moving forward.

“If I’m the nominee, I can tell you one thing, I would very much want Bernie to be a part of the journey,” Biden said. “Not as a vice presidential nominee but just engaging in all the things that he’s worked so hard to do, many of which I agree with.”

“TODAY” anchor Craig Melvin asked Biden if he suggested Sanders bow out of the race. Biden explained he would not do that as it is a difficult decision and it is ultimately Sanders’ decision.

Biden pointed out Sanders did not have any input on who he should select as a running mate. He explained how Sanders may not be the nominee, but he has still maintained a loyal following.

“Bernie has an incredible following,” Biden said. “Bernie is one of probably a half a dozen people in American history who may not be the nominee, but has had an impact on American politics in a significant way, in a positive way.”

Biden touched on where he is in the process of selecting a vice president pick. He reported they have not finalized the names or those who will be on the committee or how the committee will work.

He was asked about the November election and what will happen if it is not safe to vote in person by then.

“We’re going to have to conduct the election on November 3,” Biden said. “We have to make our Democracy as well as dealing with the disease function. We can do both.”

He recently appeared in an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo where he reiterated the same point, as IJR previously reported.
