Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden is firing back at President Donald Trump for criticizing his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.).

In their first appearance as running mates, Biden took to the podium to come to Harris’ defense.

Biden explained he is not shocked Trump made these comments and he is clearly intimidated by Harris.

“You all knew it was coming. You could’ve set your watches to it. Donald Trump has already started his attacks, calling Kamala ‘nasty,’ whining about how she’s ‘mean’ to his appointees,” Biden said.

He added, “It’s no surprise because whining is what Donald Trump does best, better than any president in American history. Is anyone surprised Donald Trump has a problem with a strong woman or strong women across the board.”

Immediately after Biden announced he had selected Harris as his running mate, Trump’s campaign slammed Harris calling her “phony,” as IJR previously reported.

Trump’s comments did not stop there.

During his press briefing on Tuesday, Trump said he was surprised Biden chose Harris because she had been “very, very nasty” to Biden during the primaries, as IJR previously reported.

He also called Harris “very disrespectful” to Biden and told reporters “it’s hard to pick somebody that that’s disrespectful.”

Biden’s campaign spokesperson Andrew Bates also released a statement reacting to Trump’s remarks.

“Donald Trump’s presidency is melting down after his failed, divisive, erratic leadership has cost over 160,000 American lives, tens of millions of jobs, and left the United States the hardest-hit country in the world by COVID-19,” Bates said.

According to Bates, Trump is also “dumbfounded after Joe Biden’s selection of a strong running mate.”

Despite Trump’s critique of Harris, several of Biden’s Democratic colleagues have expressed their approval of his decision.

Former President Barack Obama praised Biden. He said he “nailed this decision” and “underscored his own judgment and character.”
