President Joe Biden is taking aim at former President Donald Trump for trying to reverse the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, calling the effort selfish.

During remarks about protecting the right to vote at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, Biden noted that a historic number of Americans cast their ballot in the 2020 presidential election and that there were several recounts and challenges to the results.

However, none of the challenges or recounts resulted in a change to the results of the election.

“It’s clear, for those who challenge the results or question the integrity of the election, no other election has ever been held under such scrutiny or such high standards. The ‘big lie’ is just that, a big lie,” Biden said.

He continued, “The 2020 election, it’s not hyperbole to suggest, was the most examined and fullest expression of the will of the people in the history of this nation. It should be celebrated — an example of America at its best. But instead, we continue to see the example of human nature at its worst. Something darker and more sinister.”

He turned his attention to Trump’s unfounded claims of widespread fraud in the election and efforts to overturn the results:

“In America, if you lose, you accept the results. You follow the Constitution. You try again. You don’t call facts fake and then try to bring down the American experiment just because you’re unhappy. That’s not statesmanship. That’s selfishness. That’s not democracy, it’s a denial of the right to vote. It suppresses, it subjugates. The denial of full and free and fair elections is the most un-American thing that any of us can imagine, the most un-democratic, the most un-patriotic, and sadly not unprecedented.”

After the election, Republicans filed dozens of lawsuits in an effort to overturn the election results, but none of them succeeded.

Additionally, Trump encouraged lawmakers to reject the electoral votes from states that Biden won due to his allegations of fraud. He also pressured Georgia’s top election official to “find 11,780 votes” to reverse Biden’s win in the state.

Despite Trump’s claim and efforts, Congress voted to certify Biden’s electoral victory, and he was inaugurated on Jan. 20.
