Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys is suffering from dementia and cannot care for himself, prompting his family to file for a conservatorship.

According to the filing, the 81-year-old musician is suffering from a “major neurocognitive disorder (such as dementia),” People reported.

The move was necessary after his wife’s death. She was his caregiver.

“Following the passing of Brian’s beloved wife Melinda, after careful consideration and consultation among Brian, his seven children, Gloria Ramos and Brian’s doctors (and consistent with family processes put in place by Brian and Melinda), we are confirming that longtime Wilson family representatives LeeAnn Hard and Jean Sievers will serve as Brian’s co-conservators of the person,” Wilson’s family told People.

“This decision was made to ensure that there will be no extreme changes to the household and Brian and the children living at home will be taken care of and remain in the home where they are cared for by Gloria Ramos and the wonderful team at the house who have been in place for many years helping take care of the family,” the statement continued, People reported.

Even with the conservatorship, Wilson can still work on projects and participate in the activities he wants, the family said.

People obtained the court filing, which said Wilson is “unable to properly provide for his or her personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.”

His wife, Melinda Wilson, died on Jan. 30 at 77.

No successor was listed to care for him so the family sought to name conservators. Sievers and Hard were suggested since they “have had a close relationship with Mr. and Mrs. Wilson for many years, and Mr. Wilson trusts them.”

Hard and Siever’s intend to “ensure that all of Mr. Wilson’s daily living needs are (satisfied) and he has the best possible care while remaining in his home,” according to the filing.

The court documents state Wilson is “easily distracted, often even when aware of surroundings, and its purpose,” and could not attend any hearing, his doctor wrote.

Wilson and Melinda married in 1995. The couple adopted Dakota Rose, Daria Rose, Delanie Rose, Dylan and Dash.

Wilson has two daughters, Carnie and Wendy, from his first marriage.

A court hearing is scheduled for April 26, according to the documents.
