The Democrats must be getting very nervous about the current president’s chances ahead of the 2024 election.

After years of insisting he was their great champion, the slayer of former President Donald Trump, who has accomplished so many wonderful things in office, there seems to be a growing last-ditch effort to coax him off the ballot.

On Sunday, The New York Times published a poll which found President Joe Biden trailing Trump in five key states.

Former Obama strategist David Axelrod shared a screen shot of the polling data on X, formerly known as Twitter, and wrote, “It’s very late to change horses; a lot will happen in the next year that no one can predict [and] Biden’s team says his resolve to run is firm. He’s defied CW before but this will send tremors of doubt thru the party–not ‘bed-wetting,’ but legitimate concern.”

“The greatest concern is that his biggest liability is the one thing he can’t change. Among all the unpredictables there is one thing that is sure: the age arrow only points in one direction,” he continued.

Axelrod insisted Trump is “a dangerous, unhinged demagogue,” however, he argued, “The stakes of miscalculation here are too dramatic to ignore.”

Finally, he wrote, “Only [Biden] can make this decision. If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s?”

Meanwhile, Republican Never Trump writer Bill Kristol posted on X, “It’s time. President Biden has served our country well. I’m confident he’ll do so for the next year. But it’s time for an act of personal sacrifice and public spirit. It’s time to pass the torch to the next generation. It’s time for Biden to announce he won’t run in 2024.”

It's time.

President Biden has served our country well. I'm confident he'll do so for the next year.

But it's time for an act of personal sacrifice and public spirit.

It's time to pass the torch to the next generation.

It's time for Biden to announce he won't run in 2024.

The poll results from Sunday will either be a cause of great comfort or have you setting your hair on fire fretting about the future of American democracy as you dread the thought of Trump returning to the White House. And to have a poll showing Biden losing Nevada, which hasn’t gone to the Republican presidential candidate since 2004, by 10 points is brutal.

However, they are just poll results and should be taken with a grain of salt, especially in light of the 2016 and 2022 polling errors.

But those calling for Biden to stop running for re-election now are a little too late. It is no secret the president is in his 80s and continually getting older, or that he has been a rather unpopular president since mid-August 2021.

Democrats have had warning signs for years to convince Biden he should only serve one term. However, either due to his team doing an excellent job selling the idea he is still the only person who can beat Trump, or just the natural aversion to challenging the incumbent president, they diddled away the last two years.

Now they are desperately hoping Biden, who appears to be stubbornly intent on running for re-election, will reflect on his age — after years of his supporters dismissing such concerns — and decide with one year to go until the election, it isn’t worth it.
