Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) says the guilty verdict of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in George Floyd’s death is “not justice” or “full accountability.”
In an Instagram Live video on Tuesday, the New York Congresswoman said, “This verdict is not justice. Frankly, I don’t even think we call it full accountability because there are multiple officers that were there — it wasn’t just Derek Chauvin.”
“And I also don’t want this moment to be framed as this system working, working. Because it’s not working, and that’s what creates a lot of complexity in this moment,” she added.

The jury in Chauvin’s trial revealed on Tuesday that it had found Chauvin guilty on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree “depraved mind” murder, and second-degree manslaughter in connection with Floyd’s death last May, as IJR reported.
Former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama also weighed in on the verdict in a statement as they said, “Today, a jury in Minneapolis did the right thing. For almost a year, George Floyd’s death under the knee of a police officer has reverberated around the world — inspiring murals and marches, sparking conversations in living rooms and new legislation. But a more basic question has always remained: would justice be done?”

“While today’s verdict may have been a necessary step on the road to progress, it was far from a sufficient one. We cannot rest. We will need to follow through with the concrete reforms that will reduce and ultimately eliminate racial bias in our criminal justice systems. We will need to redouble our efforts to expand economic opportunities for those communities that have been too long marginalized,” they added.
