Americans Reportedly Among Those Killed in Israel

Israel's prime minister of October 8 warned of a "long and difficult" war, as fighting with Hamas left hundreds killed on both sides after a surprise attack on Israel by the Palestinian militant group. Nine Americans are reported dead in Israel due to the recent attacks.

The U.S. State Department confirmed the deaths with Newsweek.

Spokesman Matthew Miller stated, “We extend our deepest condolences to the victims and to the families of all those affected.”

“We continue to monitor the situation closely and remain in touch with our Israeli partners and the local authorities,” he added. “We are in touch with the families and providing all appropriate consular assistance.”

There are also reports of Americans who are missing following the attack.

“We can confirm that there are unaccounted-for U.S. citizens, and we are working with our Israeli partners to determine their whereabouts,” Miller said.

The Americans killed have yet to be identified by officials in the United States, according to Reuters.

Newsweek reported the recent attacks were carried out over the weekend by the extremist militant group Hamas, which is based in Palestine.

More than 1,100 people have been killed and thousands injured, many of which are civilians.

On Oct. 7, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted to X, formerly Twitter, about the violence inflicted on his people during the Jewish holiday.

He wrote, “This morning, on Shabbat and a holiday, Hamas invaded Israeli territory and murdered innocent citizens including children and the elderly. Hamas has started a brutal and evil war.”

“This is an enemy that murders children and mothers in their homes, in their beds, an enemy that abducts the elderly, children and young women, that slaughters and massacres our citizens, including children, who simply went out to enjoy the holiday,” he said.

We will be victorious in this war despite an unbearable price. This is a very difficult day for all…

— Benjamin Netanyahu – בנימין נתניהו (@netanyahu) October 8, 2023

He called it unprecedented and vowed, “We will destroy them and we will forcefully avenge this dark day that they have forced on the State of Israel and its citizens.”

Netanyahu also urged residents of Gaza to evacuate and expressed his sympathy for the lives lost in the attacks.

“We are all praying for the well-being of the wounded and all those who are being held hostage,” he added and warned Hamas to be careful with hostages.

He thanked soldiers and first responders as well as appealed to citizens to, “stand together.”

Israel officially declared war Monday, per the Associated Press, and noted they are taking “significant military steps” amid the growing conflict.
