“The View” co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin confronted Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Friday for comparing former Vice President Mike Pence to vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance.

Buttigieg said during a July 19 segment on “Real Time with Bill Maher” that he is hopeful Vance will not sacrifice his own values in the same way that Pence allegedly did while he served as Trump’s vice president. Griffin told Buttigieg that his comment “white washes” Vance and “undercuts” the alleged threat to democracy.

“But you recently seemed to equate [Pence] to J.D. Vance, whose primary credential to be vice president seems to be that he wouldn’t uphold the Constitution and do what Mike Pence did on January 6,” Griffin said. “I’m worried that equating the two white washes J.D. Vance and his constitutional stance, but also undercuts this warning you and I have both argued that second Trump term would be historically dangerous, and more dangerous than the first. Do you see how it could be interpreted that way?”

“Well look, I think we are both right to point out how dangerous and damaging a Trump presidency would be. But I also think it’s important to tell the truth about the choices that both of these men made,” Buttigieg replied. “Mike Pence and J.D. Vance are very different men, but in my view, each of them sold out his own values in order to attach himself to Donald Trump in order to get power.”

Buttigieg accused Pence of abandoning his evangelical Christian values to stand by a man who allegedly had an affairwith former porn actress Stormy Daniels in 2006, and said Vance did the same years after he harshly criticized Trump.

“He compared him to Hitler and then a few years later, because it’s J.D. Vance’s path to power, attach[ed] himself to Donald Trump,” Buttigieg said.

Buttigieg referred to a private Facebook message Vance sent to a friend in 2016 where he allegedly pondered whether Trump could be “America’s Hitler,” according to Politico. He described himself in that same year as a “Never Trump guy” during an interview with Charlie Rose to discuss his best-selling book, “Hillbilly Elegy.”

Vance said he regrets his past statements on Trump and has since called him a great president, Politico reported.

The Transportation Secretary commended Pence for refusing Trump’s request to withhold the certification of electoral votes on January 6, 2021, but argued a government official upholding the Constitution is a “low bar” of expectations.

Griffin then repeated her question on whether it undercut their warnings of a second Trump term. Buttigieg warned Trump’s second term will be “dramatically worse” than the first, claiming the former president will have less “constraints.”

Pence said in March he will not endorse Trump ahead of the 2024 election over their “profound” disagreements. He defended his certification of the electoral votes saying he upheld his “constitutional duties,” and further argued Trump’s plans are “at odds with the conservative agenda.”
