Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams (D) said singer Taylor Swift’s political activism “inspired Americans.”

In a tweet, the same day that Swift’s Netflix document was released, Abrams praised Swift for “encouraging young people to make their hopes real.”

“[Taylor Swift], thank you for encouraging young people to make their hopes real. Your activism has inspired Americans — particularly young people who can feel unseen [and] unheard (and aren’t always wrong) — to engage and fight for our democracy.”

Swift’s new song, “Only the Young,” was influenced by her activism during the 2018 mid-term election, as IJR previously reported.

In a previous interview with Variety, she shared some of her feelings about how the election turned out.

After her preferred candidate for the open Senate in Tennessee lost to then-Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R), Swift said, “I was really upset about Tennessee going the way that it did.”

She added that the results led her to write her new song. Swift also said that she hopes her song with stir up political conversations in the country.

Abrams was the 2018 Democratic nominee for governor in Georgia and lost to the Republican, Brian Kemp, by roughly 55,000 votes.
