Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) issued a response to former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) announcement that he is running for the state’s governor in 2022.
Abbott listed in a tweet the things he claims O’Rourke wants to do.
“Defund the police, kill good paying oil and gas jobs, allow chaotic open border policies, support the failing Biden agenda, impose socialism, take your guns,” Abbott wrote.
He added, “Bring it.”

O’Rourke made the announcement on Twitter along with a video message, as IJR reported.
“I’m running for governor. Together, we can push past the small and divisive politics that we see in Texas today — and get back to the big, bold vision that used to define Texas. A Texas big enough for all of us,” he wrote.
According to O’Rourke, Texas officials are spending their time on “the kind of extremist policies around abortion or permitless carry or even in our schools that really only divide us and keep us apart and stop us from working together on the truly big things that we want to achieve for one another.”
He continued, “It’s a really small vision for such a big state, but it doesn’t have to be that way.”
In September, one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country went into effect in Texas, banning abortions after six weeks, as IJR previously reported.
Texas received significant criticism from lawmakers and President Joe Biden over the bill.
“This extreme Texas law blatantly violates the constitutional right established under Roe v. Wade and upheld as precedent for nearly half a century,” Biden said.
He added, “The Texas law will significantly impair women’s access to the health care they need, particularly for communities of color and individuals with low incomes.”
Abbott said at the bill-signing ceremony, “Our creator endowed us with the right to life, and yet millions of children lose their right to life every year because of abortion. In Texas, we work to save those lives.”
He later signed a new bill into law, adding more restrictions to abortion access. The law prohibits the use of abortion-inducing medication after seven weeks of pregnancy.
