Veteran political analyst Brit Hume appeared Monday on Fox News and described parallels between President Donald Trump’s  policy maneuvers and former President Ronald Reagan’s confrontation with air traffic controllers in the early 1980s.

Over four decades ago, Reagan dismissed more than 11,000 air traffic controllers who were on strike. During an appearance on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” Hume commented on what he said was the aggressive — yet effective — leadership style shared by both presidents.

“There was a lot of hand-wringing when Reagan did that. I’ll never forget it. And it turned out to be quite popular, and it turned out also to be effective. What we see this president doing now is a blizzard of action.”

Hume said what Trump did was “real action.”

“That episode yesterday with Colombia, which triggered some semi-hysterical reactions from Democrats and other Trump critics, worked. The guy, you know, the Colombian president, backed down, and the next thing you know he’s volunteering to send his own personal airplane to pick up these criminals. It was a complete success in a matter of hours,” Hume said.

Hume said that Trump’s detractors might want to wait for an unpopular decision before launching their attacks.

“You know that the Democrats are looking at this, and Trump’s critics are looking for something to attack him on. My thought would be, you know, they might ought to wait until he does something that’s not popular because this I think will prove to have been popular,” Hume said.

Trump announced that he would implement tariffs, visa restrictions, and other punitive actions against Colombia following its refusal to accept two U.S. military flights carrying migrants. Trump declared these steps necessary, citing Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s decision as a threat to U.S. national security.

“These measures are just the beginning,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social. “We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States.”
