    • The federal government shutdown is being referred to as the “Schumer Shutdown.”
    • This shutdown results in the furlough of approximately 750,000 government employees.
    • Even though these employees are not working during the shutdown, they will receive back pay, as required by a law enacted in 2019.
    • The cost of back pay to these furloughed employees amounts to $400 million per day.
    • Senator Joni Ernst’s office provided the estimate of these daily costs.
    • Cumulatively, these expenses are projected to cost taxpayers $1.2 billion.
