Daily Caller News Foundation

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer notched low favorability among voters in April, according to a poll from The Economist/YouGov released on Wednesday.

The survey found that just 23% of voters held a favorable view of Schumer, while 51% of respondents said they viewed the New York Democrat unfavorably. The poll comes after Schumer faced enormous intraparty backlash over his vote to help advance a GOP spending bill backed by President Donald Trump in March.

Several Democratic lawmakers have notably called for Schumer to step down in recent weeks, including Democratic Maryland Rep. Glenn Ivey and Democratic Michigan State Sen. Mallory McMorrow. Some left-wing youth activist organizations have also urged Schumer to resign.

The Democratic Senator’s approval ratings have fallen since January, when his favorability among voters was 30% while 41% of respondents said they viewed him unfavorably, according to a January Economist/YouGov poll.

Relatedly, Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez led Schumer by 19 points in a hypothetical matchup of the 2028 New York Senate primary, according to a Data for Progress poll released April 4. Democrats have both privately and publicly urged Ocasio-Cortez to challenge Schumer in New York’s 2028 Senate primary if he seeks reelection, NBC News reported on March 20.

The Democratic Party has reportedly been struggling to decide on what issues to prioritize and develop strong messaging that resonates with voters in the aftermath of its losses in the 2024 election cycle. The party has also been marred by record-low favorability ratings, with the party receiving just a 29% favorability rating, according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS released March 16.

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Ken Martin said in a Feb. 18 memo that Americans view the GOP as “the party of the working class and Democrats as the party of the elites.”

The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted from April 13 to 15, and surveyed 1512 U.S. adult citizens. The margin of error was 3.4 percentage points.

Schumer’s office did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
