Democratic strategist James Carville predicted Tuesday there could be an “uprising within the Democratic Party” in the coming months if top lawmakers’ “plan” does not yield results.

Democrats are facing record-low favorability, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have garnered criticism for not effectively leading their party. Carville said on “The Situation Room” that even he is angry at his own party due to losing in November to President Donald Trump.

WATCH:

“I’m mad at the Democratic Party … When you lose an election — a party exists for one reason and one reason only, and that is to win the election. We lost,” Carville said. “But there’s nothing permanent about this. I’ll remind people Wisconsin Supreme Court [race] is coming up. We got a huge Virginia governor’s race. They have legislative challenges.”

The Democratic strategist said he believed Schumer was correct to support passing a GOP-backed government funding bill to avert a partial shutdown, which ultimately passed on Friday.

“And I do think that Senator Schumer is right. I think he and Leader Jeffries do have a plan in place. And look, if this is not evident here in the next three or four months, then there will be a uprising within the Democratic Party,” Carville said. “But I think we should give them a chance. Let’s see what their plan and their strategy is.”

Schumer said on “Morning Joe” Wednesday that his party’s duty is to decrease Trump’s popularity. He asserted he and Jeffries are aligned on a plan of attack.

“We are fighting on all of the fronts to go after Trump, not have a circular firing squad, which Democrats tend to do, particularly when there’s such an enemy as Trump, so that the basic premise that we are going after him on — and Hakeem and I are working on this very closely together … is that Trump is taking things away from the middle class, from you, to pay for tax cuts for the rich,” he said.

Carville added that he recently met with Jeffries and said that he was “hopeful” about the agenda the House minority leader shares with Schumer.

“I got to tell you, I think that there’s a good plan brewing in there. I really do,” he said. “The best plan is not going to be very good because we don’t have the vote, we don’t have the power.”

Trump’s approval rating is equal to its highest point across both of his terms at 47%, according to an NBC News poll published on Sunday.
