Former Special Counsel Robert Hur is rejecting the claim he exonerated President Joe Biden over his handling of classified documents.

During a hearing on Tuesday, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) claimed, “This lengthy, expensive, and independent investigation resulted in a complete exoneration of President Joe Biden. For every document you discussed in your report, you found insufficient evidence that the president violated any laws about possession or retention of classified materials.”

Jayapal asked if it was correct Hur analyzed a specific part of the Espionage Act, which makes “willful retention” of “national defense information” a crime.

Hur noted that was the correct law he analyzed.

However, he added, “I need to go back and make sure that I take note of a word that you used, ‘Exoneration.’ That is not a word that we used in the report. That’s not part of my task as a prosecutor.”

As he was talking, Jayapal started to interrupt him and claimed, “You exonerated him.”

“We did not exonerate him,” Hur reiterated.

However, Jayapal shot back, “Mr. Hur, it’s my time, thank you.”

Hur declined to recommend charges. However, his report included several damaging portions about Biden’s memory in an effort to explain his decision.
